The Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer for Butler County and has many responsibilities. Among those are providing public safety and law enforcement services to citizens of the county, overseeing the county jail operations, registering and monitoring offenders, and duties related to the court such as civil process service and court security.
Sheriff Kelly Herzet proudly serves Butler County as Sheriff. Born and raised in Butler County, he has a long history of service with the Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Kelly L. Herzet is a lifelong resident of Butler County, Kansas. He was born and raised in Potwin, where he still resides.
Sheriff Herzet began his career in 1982 by volunteering as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff, until 1984 when he took a full time position as Deputy Sheriff. He then attended the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, successfully graduating as a certified full-time officer.
Sheriff Herzet served as a Deputy from 1984 until 1987 when he took a brief leave to work as a Security Sergeant for the Wolf Creek Nuclear Power Plant. His love of the Sheriffs Office and Butler County drew him back and in 1993 he once again took a position of Deputy Sheriff in the Patrol Division.
Sheriff Herzet served several years as a Deputy, until 2000 when he was promoted to Detective and began work in the Investigations Division. In 2002 he was promoted to Detective Sergeant and worked to directly supervise the division's Detectives in many cases over the years. He participated in a great deal of training and high profile events during this time of service.
In December 2009 he was appointed Undersheriff by Sheriff Craig Murphy. His duties as 2nd in command of the Sheriffs Office included direct oversight of the Detention Facility as well as all operations of the department.
In early 2011, Sheriff Murphy made the decision to retire. By statute, the Republican Party was responsible to fill the elected position of Sheriff. Ultimately Sheriff Herzet was the candidate selected to receive this nomination. This nomination was confirmed by Governor Brownback who appointed him Sheriff. Sheriff Herzet was officially sworn in to office on April 25th, 2011.
In November of 2012, the good citizens of Butler County, Kansas elected Herzet to his first term as their elected Sheriff. Sheriff Herzet lookings forward to serving the citizens of Butler County in his role as Sheriff, for many years to come.
